Prostate cancer surgery involves either removal of the prostate gland such as with da Vinci robotic prostatectomy and open prostatectomy or alternatively prostate cancer surgery involves the use of ablative technologies to destroy prostate tissue while leaving the prostate gland in place such as with cryotherapy (freezing of the prostate), HIFU (HIgh Intensity Focused Ultrasound) and brachytherapy (radioactive seeds). Miami urologist David Robbins MD, specializes in the field of robotic surgery for prostate cancer. Utilizing the latest techniques in da Vinci robotic surgery, Dr. Robbins is able to provide patients with a minimally invasive option for prostatectomy performed through small keyhole incisions using a 3 dimensional camera and miniaturized precise robotic instrumentation. Robotic surgery outcomes are considered by most to be superior with regard to prostate cancer cure as well as maintenance of erectile function and urinary continence.

Miami urologist Dr. Amery Wirtshafter is an international leader in the field of cyrosurgery for prostate cancer treatment. Cryosurgery is a minimally invasive, day surgery procedure in which Dr. Wirtshafter places several small needles (cryoprobes) into the prostate through the patients skin without the need for a surgical incision. The prostate is then treated with two freeze and thaw cycles using argon and then helium gas. Operative times are typically under one hour and patients go home that very day with only a temporary urinary catheter. Dr. Wirtshafter leads regional workshops in cryotherapy and is one of the worlds most experienced surgeons performing cryosurgery for the treatment of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer surgery can also be performed using a technique called HIFU which stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. HIFU is currently not FDA approved for the treatment of prostate cancer in the United States. It is currently under investigation and patients who desire therapy using this currently alternative approach can be treated at locations in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
